Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners contain refrigerant — the older ones use CFCs and HCFCs (Freon), newer ones use HFCs. All of them are regulated, and under Section 608 of the federal Clean Air Act (40 CFR Part 82), that refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified technician using certified equipment before the appliance is ever crushed, scrapped, or landfilled. Since the EPA’s 2020 update, the final disposer even has to document that the refrigerant was recovered.
Translation: you legally cannot leave a fridge at the curb for regular trash, and a hauler who just tosses it in a pile and drives it to a scrapyard is breaking the law — and venting ozone-depleting gas into the Hemet air while they’re at it.
